Construction Gothic era

Construction began on the cathedral in May 1298, under the reign of James II and the bishop’s mandate Pelegri Bernardo (1288-1300).  It started with Barcelona tourism 99the header, apart from the old Romanesque cathedral sculpture and drawing some element from the imposts of the St. Ivo.  The works were not the construction of a new cathedral, but as a reform and expansion of the Romanesque cathedral.

It was done in stages without ever completely demolishing the temple and making it serve for worship throughout the work. Thus the cathedral retains the same corridor as the Romanesque and the ambulatory is built around a Romanesque apse.
Drawing of the Cathedral.

The first stage consisted of the construction of the apse, the radial chapels and the crypt of the sanctuary.  These were completed in 1338 by the master Jaime Fabre.  It is not known when Fabre left the post of master.

In 1384, King Pedro the Ceremonious Rock wrote a letter to complain about having broken pipes carrying water to the royal palace, Roca took over repairs.  He died in 1388 and the stonemason Pere Viader continued until 1397 when he was the master architect and Bargues Arnau was the director of the chapter.

His assistant Jaume Sola served from 1407 to 1412.  Bartolome Gual remained in office for a long time until 1441 and built the dome with wood panelling.   He also worked on the cloister. Escuder Andrew was appointed on 1st March 1442 until he resigned in 1463, and ended the faculty and virtually the entire structure of the temple.  The facade, which was designed by Carles Galtes of Rouen (called Carli) is dated from April 27th of 1408. One can say that the works of the Gothic construction lasted about 150 years.
